What’s involved with root canal therapy?

Also known as endodontic therapy, this procedure focuses on injuries and diseases in the dental pulp, which is found in a canal beneath the hard enamel exterior of each tooth. This pulp is comprised of nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue, and is most active during the years when tooth development occurs. Once this process is complete, adult teeth don’t require pulp to survive, which is why it can be removed without issue when infection or inflammation arise.

What causes tooth pulp to become infected or inflamed?

Along with deep decay that is not detected or removed before it reaches and harms the interior of a tooth, tooth fractures (or breaks in the hard enamel of a tooth) can negatively impact the health of teeth and exposure them to damaging bacteria. Traumatic injuries caused by impact or severe decay can also cause infection or inflammation, which can lead to the death of the tooth nerve.
